Flinders Collection. 1802-

The collection consists of approximately 60 volumes which are mostly monographs with a few serial issues and microfilm of manuscripts. All are catalogued. There are also uncatalogued ephemera such as postcards, photographs, programs and commemorative material. The Collection also contains one original manuscript letter written in 1802 by Flinders to his wife Ann and three flower paintings by Ann Flinders. There is also an official Matthew Flinders Bicentenary Medallic Commemorative cover 1774-1974. A comprehensive bibliography of Matthew Flinders has been compiled.

Flinders was a captain in the navy, hydrographer and discoverer. On 24 Jan. 1801 he was given command of HM Sloop Investigator, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander, for the purpose of surveying the coast of Australia.
